[Paper] New research led by Dr Hosozawa et al. on gender inequality and adolescent bullying across 69 countries is published.
The research group led by Dr Hosozawa, Dr Okawa and Prof Iso in collaboration with the Department of Public Health at Juntendo University, revealed the association between national gender inequality and adolescent bullying victimization and the role of corporal punishment prohibiting laws.
Key Findings
The research found that in countries with higher levels of gender inequality, the frequency of adolescent bullying victimization is higher, with a stronger association for boys.
Laws prohibiting corporal punishment (specifically those enacted within the last 10 years) weakened the link between gender inequality and bullying.
Implications
The findings suggest that bullying by reducing gender inequality and promoting the legal prohibition of corporal punishment, societies may be able to significantly decrease bullying among adolescents.
